Create Mentorship Program for Underrepresented Individuals
At Ponce Tree Services, one initiative we implemented to foster diversity, equity, and inclusion was creating a mentorship and skills development program for underrepresented individuals interested in the tree care industry. With over 20 years of experience and my certification as an arborist, I recognized the lack of opportunities for people from diverse backgrounds to enter this specialized field. We intentionally recruited individuals from underprivileged communities, many of whom had no prior experience in tree care, and provided hands-on training, safety education, and certifications to help them build long-term careers. By creating a supportive environment where everyone felt valued and equipped to succeed, we empowered employees to grow professionally while fostering a sense of belonging.
The impact of this program has been incredible. Not only has it strengthened our team by bringing in fresh perspectives, but it has also helped individuals secure stable, well-paying jobs in an industry they may not have otherwise considered. Several employees who started in this program have grown into leadership roles, which has created a more inclusive workplace culture and strengthened our overall performance. My years of experience gave me the insight to see where gaps existed, and my leadership ensured the program was structured to deliver real results. This initiative reinforced our commitment to creating opportunities while making a meaningful difference in our community.

Prioritize Hiring from Diverse Backgrounds
At Ozzie Mowing & Gardening, one initiative we've implemented to foster diversity, equity, and inclusion is prioritizing hiring team members from diverse cultural backgrounds and individuals with varying levels of experience. By doing this, we've not only built a workforce that reflects the diverse communities we serve, but we've also created an environment where different perspectives and ideas flourish. To support this, I developed an internal mentorship program where I personally guide team members in honing their horticultural skills and understanding the nuances of customer service. With over 15 years of experience as a certified horticulturist, I've been able to share the technical knowledge and customer-centric values that have been the cornerstone of my success. This mentorship initiative ensures that everyone, regardless of their starting point, has the tools to excel.
The impact has been profound. Our clients have consistently commented on how our team's diverse perspectives bring fresh ideas to their projects, whether it's creative landscaping designs or innovative garden solutions. Internally, the team has grown more cohesive, learning from each other's unique experiences and fostering a workplace where everyone feels valued. This initiative has not only improved our service quality but has also created meaningful career pathways for individuals who might not have otherwise entered the industry. Watching these team members thrive and knowing I've played a role in their growth is one of the most rewarding aspects of running Ozzie Mowing & Gardening.
Support Students and New Graduates
At The Alignment Studio, one of our key initiatives to foster diversity, equity, and inclusion was creating a mentorship program specifically designed to support students and new graduates from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. With over 30 years of experience in physical therapy, I've seen firsthand how barriers such as limited access to professional networks or financial constraints can impact aspiring health professionals. Drawing on my experience working with athletes from various cultural backgrounds and my leadership roles at institutions like The Mater Hospital, I designed this program to provide tailored guidance, hands-on training, and career development opportunities. We actively collaborate with universities and local organizations to identify participants and ensure they feel supported as they enter the workforce.
The impact of this initiative has been profound. Since launching, we've helped several young professionals secure placements in clinics, including The Alignment Studio, and build their confidence in the field. One mentee, a talented physical therapy graduate who faced financial barriers, has now established themselves as a key member of our team and a role model for others in similar situations. This initiative has strengthened our culture of inclusion and brought fresh perspectives to our team, enhancing our ability to connect with and support patients from all walks of life. By leveraging my background and qualifications, I was able to develop a program that not only benefits individuals but also fosters a more diverse and empathetic approach to care within the clinic.
